Commander Michael G. Mullen

6 June 1985 through 9 October 1987


Commander Michael G. Mullen was born in Los Angeles, California and graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1968. Upon commissioning, he served aboard the USS COLLETT (DD-730) as Navigator and ASW Officer. After completion of Destroyer School in February 1971 he was assigned to the USS BLANDY (DD-943) where he served as Weapons Officer and Operations Officer.


In January 1973 Commander Mullen took command of the USS NOXUBEE (AOG-56) and in 1975 he was assigned to the U. S. Naval Academy where he served as a Company Officer and as Executive Assistant to the Commandant of Midshipmen. In 1978 he was ordered to the USS FOX (CG-33) as Chief Engineer after which he completed a tour as Executive Officer in USS STERETT (CG-31). In 1983 he attended the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School and was awarded the degree of Master of Science in Operations Reasearch. Commander Mullen assuned command of USS GOLDSBOROUGH (DDG-20) on 6 June 1985.


Commander Mullen is married to the former Deborah Morgan of Sherman Oaks, California and has two sons, John and Michael.

On October 1, 2007 Admiral Mullen was sworn in as the 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
