Shipmates,
The 2025 USS Goldsborough Association Reunion was another great success. Albuquerque had something for everyone to enjoy. The weather was great although I knew that we were in a much higher altitude than most of us were used to. The Sheraton Uptown hotel did a great job taking care of us. Many of us arrived on Friday or Saturday and got an early start on enjoying the sights and foods of the area. On Sunday afternoon the Hospitality room got opened as we all started renewing old times and friendships. We were missing some of our regulars due to health or other family matters but we hope to see them next year. We did have a new attendee, Jonathan Olson, who was local and passed on some things to do in the area.
Early Monday morning, some of us got up to do what Albuquerque is known for and took a hot air balloon ride. As one who is not overly fond of heights, I had some reservations about it, but the folks at Rainbow Ryders set me at ease. The views were fantastic and the ride was surprisingly smooth. We landed where the International Balloon Festival was getting setup and enjoyed the customary after balloon ride drink. The balloon crews did a great job of getting the balloons up and back down and put away. It was an amazing ride and I would recommend it. In the afternoon some took a train ride to Sante Fe. Although there wasn’t a lot going on in Sante Fe on Monday afternoon, an ice cream store and restaurant with a bar were found to enjoy. The views from the train made the trip worthwhile without the ice cream.
On Tuesday, we boarded the bus and went to the Indian Pueblo Cultural to learn about the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico. After touring the museum, we enjoyed a lunch of Indian Tacos put out by the Cultural center. We then proceeded to the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History. There we learned about the history of nuclear power, weapons, and medicine. There was also an outside area with many of the missiles and planes that could deliver nuclear weapons. There was also an artillery piece that could use nuclear shells. It was very interesting to tour the museum and pick up some more information.
Wednesday morning, we had the annual meeting where Paul Scheppers was elected to president and Larry Fry was elected to Vice-President. It was also voted to take the 2027 reunion back to Tennessee in Knoxville or Chattanooga. Pat and Connie Taylor will host.
Although Bob Franklin wasn’t able to attend, he did a great job of getting this reunion set up. We only had a few finishing touches to make this another great reunion. Thanks, Bob
Next years reunion is being planned for Biloxi, Mississippi with Bob franklin and Bill Biller hosting. As soon as we get some more information on this we will get it out.
Bill Biller
